Comments, descriptions: The Graduate School of the Academy of Korean Studies is a specialized institution focusing on the provision of doctorate as well as master's programs in all fields of Korean Studies. It is distinct from many other graduate schools in that it is not affiliated with an undergraduate program. Therefore, the AKS Graduate School places emphasis on educating students to carry out future research by involving them in research activities. Completion of course work in Korean Thought I & II, Korean Society I & II and Hanmun (Classical Sino-Korean) is required as a broad basis for more specialized research. Graduate students are exempt from paying fees for tuition and accommodation, which is provided on campus to encourage complete devotion to study. Stipends are also available to students who maintain outstanding grades. In an effort to promote the study of Korean culture internationally, opportunities are offered to young foreign scholars interested in Korean Studies to receive the same education as Korean students at the AKS Graduate School, with similar privileges.

Comments, descriptions: Cornell University is pleased to announce a new Ph.D program for students wishing to specialize in East Asian, South Asian, or Southeast Asian religious traditions. The program builds upon Cornell's internationally recognized strengths in Asian area studies. Ideally, candidates will have undergraduate and/or graduate preparation in Religious Studies and Asian Studies. It is customary, though not required, that viable candidates will have begun their study of the necessary primary and secondary languages for their chosen field of specialization. Acceptance to the field of Asian Religions is contingent upon the agreement of a faculty member to serve as the student's committee chair and principal advisor for the duration of his or her graduate studies.
The field of Asian Religions is designed to attract a diverse body of students with multiple interests and talents and to prepare them for careers in teaching and research. Students will develop a program of study in consultation with their principal advisor and Special Committee and will be expected to demonstrate competence in several areas:
I. Major Field: specialization in a religious tradition or traditions in a single cultural zone, including an understanding of the dynamics of religion (praxis, doctrine, community, etc.), the relevant language(s), and course work in related disciplines.
II. Minor Field: a sub-specialization in at least one tradition or discipline ancillary to the major field, providing a basis for disciplinary or area comparison and broadening teaching capabilities of our students.
III. History, Theory, and Methods of the Academic Study of Religion. Students and faculty of Asian Religions at Cornell University benefit from substantial library holdings in East Asian, South Asian, and Southeast Asian monographs, periodicals, and reference works, as well as audio-visual, microform, and electronic media.
The Wason Library collection, ranked eighth among university libraries in the United States, contains more than half a million holdings related to China, Japan, and Korea. The South Asian and Southeast Asian (John M. Echols Collection) holdings each represent almost 300,000 volumes. Both collections are integrated within the Kroch Library, along with related Western-language publications. Students also benefit from the support of area studies programs, all National Resource Centers which have a long and rich history at Cornell University, including the East Asia Program, the South Asia Program, and the Southeast Asia Program.
Languages Offered at Cornell are: Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese),
Japanese, Korean, Burmese, Indonesian, Javanese, Khmer, Tagalog, Thai, Vietnamese,

The Department of Religion at Duke University admits students for the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in religion with a specialization in Asian religions and modernity. Students with an interest in this field enter the graduate program in the Religion and Modernity course of study, with a subspecialization in either Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, or, more generally, Asian religions. Duke graduate faculty members coordinate closely with colleagues at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, both of which are a short drive from Duke. Comments, descriptions: Students are trained in the study of Buddhism and East Asian Religions in their historical and cultural contexts. Current strengths of the department include medieval Chinese religions, especially Buddhism and Taoism, modern Japanese religions, contemporary Buddhism in Japan, and monastic Buddhism in India. Students are encouraged to study with all three faculty members in the Asian field. In addition to seminars in Asian Religions, students also take one course in theoretical approaches to the study of religion together with students from other fields in the department.
Financial support from the university is available to full-time students on a competitive basis. The “Plan for Graduate Education at McMaster” sets a minimum guaranteed funding for doctoral students. Scholarships are given for the first two years of the M.A. programme and the first four years of the Ph.D. programme. Outstanding students are eligible for additional university scholarships.

McMaster University has a distinguished record in the study of Asian religions. Graduates of the program hold academic positions across North America and the rest of the world. The Department of Religious Studies offers degrees that examine the phenomena of religion as it affects individuals, as it operates in culture, and as it addresses questions of life's ultimate values. Buddhism is the religion that is most strongly represented in departmental offerings; however, most of the other major world religions are also represented. The methods of study are drawn from the academic disciplines of the history of religions and Buddhist theology, and from a commitment to presenting traditions from perspectives sympathetic to the living religious communities themselves. Comments, descriptions: The OSU program in Asian art includes a large component concentrating on the art of Buddhism. Comments, descriptions:The Department of Religion emphasizes the study of Buddhism and East Asian Religions in their historical and cultural contexts. Current strengths of the department include medieval and early modern Japanese Buddhism, modern Japanese religion, medieval and early modern Chinese Buddhism, and Chinese popular religion. Students normally specialize in either China or Japan, but are still expected to gain a general knowledge of all major East Asian traditions. Students in this area work closely with faculty in other departments. Students also take at least two courses in the theory of religion together with students in other fields of religion.
The program is relatively short. Students complete general examinations before the end of their third year of study, leaving another two years of funding to undertake the research and writing of the dissertation. On average, one or two new students in East Asian Religions are admitted into the department each year, usually with funding for five years. The university emphasizes concentrated study at the Ph.D. level. Toward that end, relatively generous fellowships are intended to cover full-time study, completion of general examinations, additional language training, and research at home and abroad. All students are required to assist in teaching for one semester, but otherwise teaching duties are kept to a minimum.
Course work and independent research using advanced Chinese and/or Japanese are essential to the program. Before entering the program most applicants have completed at least three years of formal study, usually more, of either Chinese or Japanese.

Program Description: St. John's College is the premier great books college in the United States. In the Eastern Classics program, students study the classical texts from India, China and Japan and complete a language tutorial in either Sanskrit or Classical Chinese. The aim of the Eastern Classics program is to seek a deeper understanding of the fundamental and enduring questions that have been raised by thoughtful human beings in the rich traditions of the East. In accordance with the St. John's College approach to education, all classes are conducted by discussion. The seminar covers a wide range of Indian, Chinese and Japanese texts, while the preceptorials and language tutorials consist of more concentrated study. The course of study consists of 34 credit hours, completed in one calendar year, beginning in the fall and concluding in the summer. It is offered only on the Santa Fe campus.

of Religious Studies offers undergraduate and graduate courses in the area of
Buddhism. The library holding has expanded over the years and now has books
in various languages such as Sanskrit, Tibetan, Chinese (classical and modern),

and serials. Students from various parts of the world have enrolled and graduated
with both MA and PhD degrees. Students have transferred to our Buddhist Studies

Comments, descriptions: Indological studies have been offered at Copenhagen University since the middle of the 19th century and have been devoted to the study of classical Indian languages, cultures and history.
The regular course offerings include Sanskrit, Introduction to Indian History and Culture, and several courses in the general areas of Indian History, Indian Religion and Philosophy, History of Indian Literature, Linguistic History of India, Early Buddhism, and Indian Society. In addition to classical Indian studies, the Indology Section includes Hindi and studies of mediaeval and modern India. However, at the present time, courses in these subjects are not offered on a regular basis.
The Indology Section works closely with the Tibetan Studies Section at Copenhagen University, which offers instruction in classical and modern Tibetan, Tibetan literature, history, and religion. It has also been working closely with Lund University (Sweden) in the development of a master's degree in South Asian Studies via the Øresund University.
The department has an excellent library and easy access to the more comprehensive collection at the Danish Royal Library. Since 2000, the department has taken over the publication of the Critical Pali Dictionary and houses its valuable collection of Pali sources, which is open to serious students and scholars of middle Indic languages and of early Buddhism.

With fourteen full-time faculty members working in thirteen languages that span the globe's cultural traditions, no other philosophy program offers the depth, breadth, and expertise of the University of Hawai'i. The department sponsors the renowned East-West Philosophers' Conference, and the most prestigious journal in Asian thought: Philosophy East and West, and cooperates in the publication of the Journal of Chinese Philosophy. Comments, descriptions: The Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies (PGIPBS) of the University of Kelaniya was earlier known as the Vidyalankara Institute of Buddhist Studies when it functioned, since its inception on 23rd November 1975 until 30th Decembers 1979 , as an Institute of the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon ( Sri Lanka ). Originally located within the main campus of the University of Kelaniya , the Institute has been relocated to be near the city of Colombo , for the convenience for both the teachers as well as the students. Presently, it is situated at 133/19 Nawala Road , Colombo 5. Its present name, status and structure are all derived from the Postgraduate Institute of Pali and Buddhist Studies Ordinance No.8 of 1977, which came into operation on 1st January 1980 . In accordance with this Ordinance the Institute functions as an organization within the University of Kelaniya , under the direction and control of a Board of Management (executive authority) constituted to represent both academic and administrative personnel. All matters relating to curriculum development, courses of study, teaching and research and the conduct of examinations are exercised by a Faculty Board (academic authority) subject to the approval of the Board of Management and the University Senate.

Comments, descriptions: Indian Philosophy is an important area of study at the Department of Philosophy at the Unversity of Liverpool. We welcome applications for graduate study in the field, at the level of MA, MPhil and PhD. There are opportunities to study the Indian sources and to develop research skills. There is provision for the study of the Sanskrit language.
The journal Contemporary Buddhism is edited by Michael McGhee. Graduate students will have the opportunity of being able to work with other eminent philosophers in the department, whose interests include Greek and Hellenistic Philosophy, Plotinus, Medieval Philosophy, Feminist Theory and Research, Leibniz, the philosophy of space and time, theories of consciousness, Environmental Philosophy and Political Philosophy.

We administer the Tasmania-Tibet Partnership Program ( http://www.utas.edu.au/docs/humsoc/philosophy/TTPP/TTPP.html), Australia's only academic exchange program with the Tibetan universities in exile in India. Through this program we bring eminent Tibetan scholars to the University of Tasmania as visiting lecturers and research scholars and send our students to study at the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Sarnath and the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics in Dharamsala.
